School security experts to provide violence prevention and emergency response training to Tennessee educators
Designed to help schools with the increasing number of threats of violence the training will include generally recognized and accepted best practices in training staff and implementing security procedures and practices.

SPRINGFIELD, MO, November 11, 2008 /Missouri News Articles/ -- Knoxville and Nashville Tennessee will be the site of intensive training on best practices for preventing and responding to acts of school violence. Scheduled for November 12th in Knoxville at the Holiday Inn at Paperrmill and November 13th at Antioch, Tennessee, just south of Nashville at the Holiday Inn at The Crossings, nationally recognized school safety experts Dennis Lewis and Judy Brunner will work with educators from across Tennessee on this topic of critical state and national importance. According to a survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 6.5 % of students in grades 9-12 are reported to have carried a weapon on school property in the previous 30 days. The frequency and magnitude of negative behaviors will continue to rise as rates of depression and stress increase during these times of economic hardship. According to Lewis, "When it comes to school safety, seldom will you know when a tragedy has been prevented or averted; but with absolute certainty, you will know when it was not." The training comes at an especially critical time for Tennessee schools in light of the shooting at Central High School in Knoxville at the start of this school year. Brunner and Lewis are the authors of the just released, "Safe and Secure Schools - 27 Strategies for Prevention and Intervention", co-published with the American School Administrators Association.
