St. Elizabeth Academy Goes Green
St. Elizabeth Academy is among the first in the St. Louis area to switch from disposable goods in the cafeteria to washable dishware.

SAINT LOUIS, MO, March 28, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Don't be fooled by their red and white school colors. St. Elizabeth Academy is going green. The students have started to take notice and make changes to their everyday lives in order to shrink their carbon footprint. Recognizing that foam and plastic never biodegrade, the students, staff and administration have decided to wash their own dishes instead and hope to see "green" wherever they look in the cafeteria.

Principal Christina Cheak believes that this is the start of a long-term plan of transitioning for the future and will prepare students for the conservation issues that they will experience as adults. "St. Elizabeth Academy, in conjunction with other all-girls Catholic High Schools in St. Louis in the Interschool Ecological Council headed by Sr. Nancy Witwer, has been working to "green" the school. The major focus this year has been the cafeteria. SEA students wanted to address physical waste and nutritional improvement. Working as a team in meetings with Food Service Consultants, the administration at SEA and a committed student group, great strides were made and debuted. Today SEA became the first school of the council, and perhaps first among Archdiocesan high schools, to switch from disposable goods in the cafeteria to washable dishware (plates, bowls, cups, silverware)."

Already success has been measurable. The waste produced at the first environmentally conscious all school lunch was 75% less than the average from previous years. The girls in the SEA Ecological Council were duly pleased and excited by the general enthusiasm in the student body for this wonderful change."
